The Balarat Resident Counselor Program provides an opportunity for high school students to earn an elective/community service credit while assisting with the delivery of outdoor education experiences for fifth graders.
Balarat Resident Counselor will be chosen based on the essay, GPA, and school attendance. Seniors will have preference - then going down by grade level according to space available in the program.
Students must apply to the program. Once accepted, Balarat Counselors must complete a two-day training the second or third Friday/Saturday of each semester. Counselors are then assigned six days (either two three-day periods or three two-day periods) during which they will be at the Balarat site engaged in helping facilitate "Fifth-Grade Resident Programs". Balarat Counselors are responsible for any class work they might miss during their Balarat assignments.
The Balarat Resident Counselor will be accepted following successful completion of the training session. During this session Balarat Staff will be looking for individuals who can exhibit mature positive attitudes.
The Balarat Resident Counselor Program is an opportunity for high school students to utilize leadership skills, apply information gained in the classroom, and further one's own knowledge of the natural world.
This class is a fun and challenging way to expand one's educational horizons while earning five hours of elective credit.
