🌼 It’s April and we should talk all things Ea 🌼 It’s April and we should talk all things Earth! Today let’s start with the history of Earth Day!

The first Earth Day was recognized in 1970 after Rachel Carson’s best selling book “ Silent Spring” raised public awareness and concern for the environment and the links between pollution and public health!

Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin utilized students at universities nation wide to coordinate the event! Rallies were held in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles just to name a few!

The first Earth Day was very effective when it came to transforming public attitude on these issues! Major legislation was passed in the 70’s including the Clean Air Act! The Environmental Protection Agency was also created to protected air, water and land!

Next Friday, we will talk about this years Earth Day theme, so get ready!!

For our final post about the incredible women of B For our final post about the incredible women of Balarat’s history we’d like you to me Charlene Wheeler! People would refer to Charlene as “ the constant” in the program! She was dedicated to holding down the fort in our Denver office and was known as the home room mom for our Eco Intern students!
While working as Balarat’s first secretary for over 20 year, Charlene spearheaded some incredible changes in technology, going from a type writer to a computer or from a mimeograph machine to a copy machine!
Because she was there since the start of the program everyone felt as though she could never be replaced! She went on to travel the world in her retirement but always remembered Balarat and would come to visit on occasion!
We’d like to thank these women for making Balarat what it is today and all the people who helped us tell their stories over the course of this month! We hope you enjoyed this series as much as we did! ❤️
TREAT YO SELF... 👌🏽 And help Balarat at the TREAT YO SELF... 👌🏽

Today we celebrate Mona Nielsen who was instrument Today we celebrate Mona Nielsen who was instrumental in teaching Denver students about nature, survival skills, mining, pioneer history, outdoor crafts and simply how to respect, care for, conserve, appreciate the mountains and outdoors of Colorado! Mona was seen as mentor to many young people who were challenged by the structured school system and thrived under her outdoor environment and instruction.

Some other incredible facts that made Mona truly special to both Balarat and the community alike was that she graduated from North High School in 1956 making her a Denver Public School kid herself! She also attended Colorado A & M (now known as Colorado State University). She was one of the few female students to enroll in their Forestry Program, and was the only woman in the Ornithology class that year.
